When narrow-gauge works move beyond light excavation and local material handling, project teams need plant with the lifting capacity, stability and versatility to complete heavier tasks without compromising the possession plan.
Queensland’s 1,067 mm rail network creates a specific plant-planning challenge. Equipment must be configured for narrow gauge, but gauge compatibility alone does not make a machine suitable for the work.
As lift weights, working radiuses, rail lengths and material volumes increase, compact road rail vehicles can reach their practical limits. Moving too far in the opposite direction can also create problems if a machine is difficult to access, on-track or operate within the available clearances.
The decision is therefore not simply small machine versus large machine. It is about matching the machine’s role to the methodology, the corridor and the production target inside the possession window.
The Liebherr 928 BEAR fills the higher-capacity position in Anric’s narrow-gauge fleet. It is intended for tasks where increased lifting, stability, rail handling and pick-and-carry capability are central to the work package.
The BEAR is a 29-tonne hi-rail excavator fitted with Anric’s specialised rail system. It can operate across narrow and standard-gauge networks, allowing the same platform to support Queensland works as well as projects in other Australian jurisdictions.
Its value is not based on machine weight alone. The rail system, operating configuration and project-specific setup are what allow the machine to perform higher-capacity lifting and material-handling tasks on track.

These activities place different demands on the machine. Lift planning, attachment selection, travel path, rail conditions and trailer configuration must be considered together rather than treated as separate decisions.
Narrow-gauge work can involve curves, cant, variable track conditions and constrained operating areas. Those conditions become more significant when the machine is lifting, carrying or positioning heavier loads.
The BEAR uses four-point active rail suspension that automatically responds to cant and track conditions. This is designed to assist stability and control during lifting and material-handling activities.
For the project team, the practical benefit is a machine designed around the realities of on-track work rather than an excavator that has simply been adapted to sit on rail wheels. The machine, rail system and load-management process operate as one package.
That does not remove the need for detailed lift planning. Actual allowable loads remain subject to the approved load chart, working radius, machine configuration, attachment, track conditions and network requirements.
The BEAR can operate in high-ride and low-ride rail configurations. This gives the delivery team flexibility to select the configuration around the planned activity, corridor conditions and infrastructure clearances.
The correct setup should be determined before mobilisation. Access points, train stops, platforms, structures, overhead constraints, gradients and the required work sequence can all affect the most suitable operating configuration.
Planning this early prevents a capable machine arriving on site in a setup that does not suit the actual workface. It also gives the engineering, operations and project teams time to resolve interface issues before the possession begins.
The BEAR is not intended to replace compact RRVs such as the ZX65-RR or ZX95-RRmg. It fills a different role.
On a complex possession, the BEAR can undertake primary lifting, rail handling, pick-and-carry work and larger material movements. Smaller machines can then complete detailed excavation, drainage, attachment work or local distribution in restricted areas.
This division of work helps prevent the largest machine becoming tied up on tasks that can be completed more efficiently by compact plant. It also reduces the risk of asking a smaller machine to work at the edge of its practical capacity for the entire shift.
A coordinated configuration may include the BEAR, a ZX95-RRmg, a ZX65-RR and selected rail trailers. The right combination depends on the workfaces, access points, material quantities and sequence of activities.
